Description

Welcome to Jeremiah: Discerning Seasons. Throughout this class we will walk in Jeremiah’s shoes as a prophet during a critical time in biblical history, and understand why his ministry was pivotal to the survival of God’s people. Jeremiah’s book is the longest in the Bible and has some very famous passages, but they had a specific meaning in their context that helps us face realities in our own generation. Through the 51 chapters he experiences a huge range of emotions and expresses them through poetry, sermons, demonstrations and stories. His work shows us that we don’t always get to choose the way things are, but we can always choose our response to it.

Overview

  • 2

    THE CALLING

    • A unique calling from God would change everything in Jeremiah’s world. Jeremiah was a wealthy pastor’s kid who became a rejected prophet because of the call of God on his life and the word of God in his soul.

  • 3

    THE INDECISIVE KING

    • Covenants have consequences; break them with people and you break them with God. In this lesson, Paul will take us through the journey of King Zedekiah, his mistake, and the tragic effects on his life.

  • 4

    THE HARD TRUTH

    • Nobody is ever as good at lying to others as they are at lying to themselves. A century of peace had led the Jerusalem elite to tell themselves everything would be ok and that the truth would never find them out.

  • 5

    THE MEDIATOR

    • Jeremiah must stand in the middle of Jerusalem and God, praying for the best but preparing for the worst. As the pressure to ignore reality increases, he finds more creative ways of bringing his message to people’s attention.

  • 6

    THE COST OF TRUTHTELLING

    • What does it cost you to tell the truth when everyone around you wants a lie? Jeremiah suffered intensely for his message but his heart for Jerusalem would not allow him to stay silent.

  • 7

    THE AFTERMATH

    • We don’t always get to choose reality, but we can choose our response to it. As Jerusalem finally begins to deal with the reality of exile, Jeremiah guides them in the response God is looking for in them.

  • 8

    THE NEW COVENANT

    • God cleared the house of Jerusalem in order to dismantle the lies and build something new and better in its place. The people that destroyed the temple will fade from history, but the people of the new temple will find eternal life.

  • 9

    THE LEGACY

    • God may not save you from the exile but He will save you in it. At the end of Jeremiah’s life he saw a people ready to change their ways and use the experience to come out as a people of the word.
